Jacksonville Transportation Guide for New Residents
Jacksonville is a car-centric city — at 874 square miles, it is the largest city by area in the contiguous US. While public transit exists, most residents rely on personal vehicles. Understanding commute patterns, road networks, and emerging transportation options helps you choose the right neighborhood based on where you work, play, and spend time. This guide covers everything new residents need to know about getting around.
Commute Patterns and Major Routes
Average commute time: 27 minutes (near national average). Major highways: I-95 (north-south spine), I-295 (full beltway loop), I-10 (east-west to Westside/Panhandle), J. Turner Butler Blvd/SR-202 (Southside to Beaches), US-1 (connects to St. Augustine). Commute corridors: Downtown to Mandarin: 20–30 min via I-95 and San Jose Blvd. Downtown to Beaches: 25–35 min via JTB/Atlantic Blvd. Southside to Nocatee: 25–35 min via I-95 South. NAS Jax to Orange Park: 10–15 min via US-17. Mayport to Ponte Vedra: 15–25 min via A1A. Rush hour (7–9 AM, 4–6:30 PM) adds 10–20 minutes to most commutes. JTB and I-95/I-295 interchanges are the worst bottlenecks.
Public Transit Options
JTA (Jacksonville Transportation Authority): Bus system covering main corridors. Limited frequency (30–60 minute headways). Best coverage: Downtown, Westside, Northside, and along major arterials. JTA Skyway: Automated people mover connecting Downtown and the Southbank. Free to ride. Limited stops but useful for Downtown residents and workers. First Coast Flyer: Bus rapid transit (BRT) routes along major corridors. Faster and more frequent than standard bus service. Routes: Green Line (North), Blue Line (Southeast), Red Line (East to Beaches — under development). Water taxi: Seasonal service across the St. Johns River between Downtown locations. Future: JTA is planning the Ultimate Urban Circulator (U2C) to expand autonomous transit Downtown.
Biking and Alternative Transportation
Jacksonville's cycling infrastructure is expanding rapidly: Bike lanes: Growing network, particularly along Beach Blvd, Atlantic Blvd, and in urban neighborhoods (Riverside, San Marco, Springfield). Trails: Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail (14.5 miles), S-Line Urban Trail (3 miles), East Coast Greenway sections, and the in-progress Emerald Trail (30+ miles when complete). Bike share: Available in Downtown and urban core areas. Electric scooters: Available seasonally in Downtown and Beach areas. Walkable neighborhoods: Riverside, San Marco, Springfield, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach score highest for walkability. Most suburban neighborhoods require a car. Rideshare: Uber and Lyft are widely available throughout metropolitan Jacksonville.
Airport and Travel
Jacksonville International Airport (JAX): Located Northside, 20–30 minutes from most Jacksonville neighborhoods. Direct flights to: Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Chicago, Denver, New York (JFK, LGA, EWR), DC (DCA, IAD), and expanding routes.
